Bl. Elizabeth, mystic of the indwelling 天主臨居人靈

Yesterday (May 30), we celebrated the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity. The Triune God dwells in the souls of the baptized. Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity (1880-1906) was a young Carmelite mystic who bore witness to the indwelling of God. She was called “the prophet of the presence of God” and “the saint of the divine indwelling.”

 

‘House of God’

Elizabeth was born into a military environment. Both her maternal grandfather and her father were soldiers. Elizabeth herself had a fiery temperament and a will of iron. Her outbursts of anger seemed to be out of control. She was described as a “pure devil,” and the priest who prepared her for her First Communion said, “With her temperament, Elizabeth Catez will be either a saint or a demon.”

In 1887 Elizabeth received the sacrament of penance for the first time. She determined to overcome her violent temper, and promised her mother that she would strive to be the very model of a “sweet, patient, and obedient” daughter. Overcoming temper would be a long struggle which would last for years.

In 1891, Elizabeth received her First Communion. On the afternoon of her First Communion Day, Elizabeth encountered the prioress of the Carmel of Dijon, who explained to her that the name Elizabeth means “house of God.”

Elizabeth was deeply aware of “the Beloved of the Eucharist” Who had made in her His dwelling place. She desired to return love for love by the continuous struggles against her fiery temperament. Her mother later testified, “From that day (of her First Communion) and afterwards, no more fits of anger.”

When she was 18, Elizabeth spoke to a priest about her interior life: her need for silence and recollection, and her sense of “being dwelt in.” The priest explained to her the indwelling of the Holy Trinity in the soul of the baptized.

This doctrine of “indwelling” left a deep impression on Elizabeth, and became the core of her spiritual life. The priest later wrote, “I saw her borne away as on a tidal wave.”

 

Ascent to Mount Carmel

At 14, Elizabeth had already decided to become a Carmelite nun, but her mother opposed the idea. Eventually her mother agreed to her entry into Carmel, but required her to wait until her 21st birthday.

As she was waiting to enter Carmel, Elizabeth led a life of a typical young lay woman. She sang at two choirs in her parish and prepared children for First Communion. She taught catechism to a group of difficult children who worked in factories. She took part joyously in social activities such as horseback riding, playing tennis, and dancing. She entertained others with her exceptional piano skill.

Amid all these activities, however, her heart was set on God and on Carmel.

Before her entry into Carmel, Elizabeth studied the writings of St. Teresa of Avila and St. Therese of Lisieux. She became an enthusiastic follower of the “Little Way” of St. Therese.

Finally, in 1901, Elizabeth entered Carmel, and received the religious name “Sister Elizabeth of the Trinity.” She was very happy in religious life, and she spent herself all day in saving souls by means of prayer and silent immolation.

Realized herself as a spouse of Christ, she longed to be immolated with Christ through suffering. God fulfilled her desire by allowing her to experience months of suffering from Addison’s disease. She suffered with great peace and patience. Her last wish was “to die not only as pure as an angel, but transformed into Jesus Crucified.”

Before her death Nov. 9, 1906, Sister Elizabeth said, “In heaven I believe that my mission will be to draw souls to interior recollection, by helping them to renounce self in order to adhere to God in all simplicity and love; to maintain them in that profound interior silence which allows God to imprint Himself upon them and to transform them into Himself.”

昨天(五月三十日),我們慶祝了天主聖三的節日,而天主聖三臨居於受洗者的靈魂。真福聖三.依撒伯爾Bl. Elizabeth of the Trinity (1880-1906) 是聖衣會的一位年青隱修女,見證天主臨居在人的靈魂;所以,她被稱為「天主臨在的使者」,又被譽為「天主臨居的聖人」。

 

天主的居所

依撒伯爾生於軍戎世家,外祖父和父親都屬軍界。她年幼時脾氣暴燥,一發不可收拾,兼且性格極其倔强,人們稱 她為「小魔鬼」。輔導她初領聖體的神父指出:「依撒伯爾.嘉娣Elizabeth Catez這般脾性,將來她做不成聖人就會是魔鬼。」

一八八七年,依撒伯爾初辦聖功(告解),立志改善自己的脾氣;她答應母親要做一個「溫柔、忍耐和聽命」的女 兒。依撒伯爾確實費了很大的努力,經過多年的爭扎, 始能兌現她的承諾。

一八九一年,依撒伯爾在初領聖體的一天,聖衣會女院長給她說:「依撒伯爾這個名字,是『天主居所』的意 思。」

依撒伯爾十分明白她要作「至愛聖體」的居所,故更堅決要克制自己的脾氣,以回報基督的愛---以愛還愛。她 的母親說:「自她初領聖體的那一天,再不見到依撒伯爾發脾氣了。」

十八歲那一年,依撒伯爾向神父表達她的內修: 比如她對靜默與靈修的渴望,和她內心那强烈的臨在感覺。當神父解釋天主聖三確實把受洗者的靈魂作為居所的道理時,她的感受更為深切,並以此作為自己神修生 活的中心。神父其後寫道:「她好像被(這端道理的)巨浪捲去了。」

 

登上嘉爾默羅山

福女早在十四歲時,表達要當聖衣會隱修女的意願,但遭母親反對; 後來母親見她意志堅定, 便答應讓她到二十一歲時自行決定。依撒伯爾朝着這意願去過熱心平信徒的生活:她參加了堂區兩組的聖詠團、幫助兒童初領聖體、向工厰頑劣的童工講授要理。另 外,在她活躍的社交,包括騎馬、打網球、跳舞、鋼琴表演等,依撒伯爾仍常心繫天主、心繫聖衣會。

依撒伯爾加入聖衣會前,細讀了聖女大德蘭和聖女小德蘭的箸作,而特別對小德蘭的「從小事中成聖」主張,甚感 興趣, 成為她的熱切追隨者。

一九零一年,依撒伯爾終得償願,加入嘉爾默羅聖衣會,取名為「聖三依撒伯爾」修女:隱修生活極其愉快,她整 天為人靈的得救作祈禱和犧牲。

作為基督的淨配,依撒伯爾嚮往與基督一起受苦犧牲。果然,艾迪生病疫Addison’s disease使她痛苦難堪,但她以平安及忍耐去承受。她的遺願是:「我不但要死時像個純潔的天使,也要轉化為被釘的耶穌。」

依撒伯爾修女於一九零六年十一月九日逝世。她說:「我相信我在天堂上的使命是要把世人的靈魂,誘導到內在的 收心,幫助他們棄絕自己,好能以純真和愛與天主相伴;在內心的靜默中,讓天主烙印在他們的心坎裏、轉化他們。」

CHAPLET OF DIVINE MERCY 慈悲串經

On Sept. 14, 1935, the Lord Jesus taught St. Faustina a powerful prayer, the chaplet of Divine Mercy.

Here are the instructions given by Our Lord: "First of all, you will say one Our Father and Hail Mary and the I Believe in God. Then on the Our Father beads you will say the following words: 'Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.'

"On the Hail Mary beads you will say the following words: 'For the sake of His sorrowful passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.' In conclusion, three times you will recite these words: 'Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.'"

 

一九三五年的九月十四日,主耶穌親自教授聖傅天娜一端具神效的祈禱經文——慈悲串經;耶穌指導說:「首先,妳要誦唸【天主經】一次,【聖母經】」一次,【信經】一次,然後在妳唸珠的【天主經】位置唸『永生之父,我把祢至愛之子,我們的主耶穌基督的聖體聖血、靈魂及天主性奉獻給祢,以賠補我們及普世的罪過。』在唸珠的【聖母經】位置唸『因祂的至悲慘苦難,求祢垂憐我們及普世。』唸到唸珠的末段,妳以唸三次『至聖天主,至聖全能者,至聖長存者,求祢垂憐我們及普世。』作為結束。」

The Little Nothing loved the Holy Spirit 聖神的忠僕

Yesterday (May 23) was the Solemnity of Pentecost. We celebrated the coming of the Holy Spirit to the Church. Blessed Maria of Jesus Crucified (1846-1878) was an ardent promoter of devotion to the Holy Spirit.

 

A difficult childhood

Her parents had 12 sons, but they all died in infancy. The sorrowful couple went to Bethlehem on foot and asked Our Lady for a daughter. Their prayers were heard and Blessed Mary was born in I’billin, Hazafon (Israel).

Two years after her birth another boy was born to the family. Then, when Blessed Mary was only 3, her parents both died within a few days of each other. The little brother was adopted by a maternal aunt and Blessed Mary was adopted by a paternal uncle. At the age of 8 she moved to Alexandria with her uncle’s family.

In 1858, without her knowledge, the uncle arranged a marriage for Blessed Mary. Determined to consecrate herself to God, Blessed Mary refused the arrangement. Filled with wrath, her uncle hired her out as a domestic servant, making sure she had the lowest and most menial of jobs.

A man with whom she worked treated her as friend, with the intention of converting her to Islam. When Blessed Mary realized his intention, she declared that she would never abandon the Catholic faith. The man, filled with rage, cut the throat of Blessed Mary, and dumped her in an alley. This took place on the night of Sept. 7-8, 1858.

Years later, when obliged by obedience to relate the incident, Blessed Mary affirmed that she was really dead. She said that the Blessed Virgin, the angels, and the saints had received her with great kindness, and she had also seen her parents. After the heavenly vision Blessed Mary found herself in a grotto being looked after by a nurse in azure clothing.

Later, Blessed Mary realized this nurse was actually the Blessed Virgin Mary, who outlined Blessed Mary’s life program, saying, “You will never see your family again; you will go to France, where you will become a religious. You will be a child of St. Joseph before becoming a daughter of St. Teresa. You will receive the habit of Carmel in one house, you will make your profession in a second, and you will die in a third, at Bethlehem.”

She worked as a servant girl and went to France. There, in 1865, she joined the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Apparition. However, because of misunderstandings surrounding her mystical gifts, she was dismissed in 1867. She then joined the Discalced Carmelites in Pau, and received the religious habit there.

In 1870 Blessed Mary travelled with a group of Carmelites to found a monastery in India, where she made her profession. In 1875 Blessed Mary went to Bethlehem to found a monastery. On Aug. 21, 1878, Blessed Mary suffered a bad fall in the monastery garden at Bethlehem, and she died on Aug. 26 at the age of 32. Her last words were, “Oh, yes, mercy.”

 

Devotion to the Holy Spirit

Blessed Mary wanted to remain little. She loved to be called “The Little Nothing.” She often said, “Everything passes here on earth. What are we? Nothing but dust, nothingness; and God is so great, so beautiful, so lovable, and He is not loved.”

She never attended school, and remained almost total illiterate, but because of her union with God she was able to give sound and sublime theological counsel to others. The Holy Spirit had certainly filled her nothingness with sublime gifts!

As an ardent promoter of devotion to the Holy Spirit, Blessed Mary also had a great love for the Church and the Pope. She sent a message to Pope Pius IX, complaining about the lack of devotion to the Holy Spirit within the Church.

She composed a beautiful prayer: “Holy Spirit, inspire me. Love of God, consume me. Along the true road, lead me. Mary, my good mother, look down upon me. With Jesus, bless me. From all evil, all illusion, all danger, preserve me.”

昨天(五月二十三日)是五旬節,我們慶祝了天主聖神降臨於聖教會。聖衣會的真福瑪利亞Bl. Maria of Jesus Crucified (1846-1878) 是一位熱心推動敬禮天主聖神的修女。

 

憂患童年

瑪利亞的十二位兄長都在襁褓中夭折,她的雙親特地步行到伯利恆,祈求聖母賞給他們一個女兒。果真不久,瑪利 亞在現今以色列的哈匝坊Hazafon 出生。之後,天主還賞給她一個弟弟。

好景不常,年僅三歲的瑪利亞,雙親在數天內相繼死去。弟弟得姑母收養,而另一位叔輩則收養了瑪利亞;八歲那 年,舉家遷居至埃及的亞歷山大Alexandria, Egypt。

一八五八年,瑪利亞因矢志守貞,堅拒叔輩安排的婚事,遂被罰當低薪家傭。一位曾和她一起工作的人有意讓她轉 皈伊斯蘭教,故待她甚為友善,但在瑪利亞嚴正聲明對聖教的忠貞後,那人老羞成怒,把她割喉,棄置後巷,時為一八五八年九月八日的凌晨。

若干年後,真福瑪利亞因聽命而憶述當年慘痛經歷:她確定她是經歷了死亡,且見到了天堂上的聖母、眾天使和諸 聖人,和藹地接待她。她的父母也在聖人的行列中。但當神視過後,真福卻發覺她身處一個岩洞,一位藍衣護士正在照料着她——後來她明白到那護士就是童貞聖 母。聖母簡畧地預言她的餘生,說:「妳將不會與家人重逢,而要轉到法國, 在那裏修道。妳先會是大聖若瑟的女兒,再成為聖德肋撒的女兒。妳將在一所會院穿上加爾默羅會衣,在第二所會院發聖願,並於第三所會院(在伯利恆)逝世。」

康復後, 福女當家傭並轉赴法國。一八六五年,她進入顯靈聖匠女修會Sisters of St. Joseph of the Apparition,惜因她奇妙的神恩而常被誤解,兩年後被迫離開。瑪利亞轉投赤足聖衣會,並如聖母預告,穿上該修會會衣。一八七零年,在印度幫忙建立 修會分院時,發了聖願。一八七五年,真福瑪利亞往伯利恆建立另一分院。一八七八年八月二十一日,她在伯利恆修院花園跌倒,五日後因傷逝世,享年三十二歲 ——臨終吐語:「噢,是, 慈悲!」

 

對天主聖神的敬禮

真福瑪利亞常願意自認渺少,喜愛被稱為「虛無的小東西」。她常道:「世上任何事情都會過去,我們又是什麼? 只不過是塵土、虛無,而天主是如此偉大、美侖美奐、可愛,卻又不被愛。」

瑪利亞雖從未上學,是文盲。但因與主的結合,能給人正確和深義的神學指導。天主聖神的神恩,的確充盈了她的 虛無!

福女積極提倡對天主聖神的敬禮。她熱愛教會並擁護教宗。福女曾向教宗庇約九世指出當時教會的人對天主聖神的 敬禮還不足夠。

福女寫了一首美麗的經文:「天主聖神,請啟迪我。天主的愛,請燃燒我。在真理的路上,請引導我。聖母瑪利 亞,我的好母親,請垂顧我;在耶穌內,福蔭我。請保守我免於所有凶惡、虛妄和危難。」

On Wednesday, I came back to Vancouver for Confirmation Mass @ my parish. I was sponsor for two boys @ Confirmation.

Then, before I returned to Mission, I went to baptize and confirm a baby girl who was in danger of death.

Mystery of the Ascension, mystery of hope 希望的節日

Last Thursday was "Ascension Thursday," and here in Canada we celebrated the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord on Sunday, May 16.

According to one catechism, "Christ remained on earth 40 days after His Resurrection to prove that He had truly risen from the dead and to complete the instruction of the apostles."

At the end of the 40 days, Christ ascended into heaven. The mystery of the Ascension gives us both a sense of hope and a sense of mission.

 

Sense of hope

The Ascension is a feast of hope and a foretaste of heaven. Pope St. Leo the Great said, "Christ's Ascension is our own ascension; our body has the hope of one day being where its glorious Head has preceded it."

Christ ascended into heaven to enjoy the triumph which He had merited. In the Creed we profess that "He is seated at the right hand of the Father."

"Seated" is a figurative expression which signifies first, that after the work of redemption, the Saviour is enjoying an unchangeable repose in eternal happiness; and second, that He is the King of kings and Judge of the living and the dead.

"At the right hand of the Father" signifies first, that Christ as God is equal to the Father in all things; and second, Christ as man enjoys power and glory beyond that of all mere creatures.

But Christ ascended into heaven also for our benefit: first, He opened to mankind that heaven which Adam's sin had closed; second, He sent the Holy Spirit to the Church; third, He intercedes for us with His Father.

Father Gabriel of St. Mary Magdalen, OCD, wrote, "Our right to heaven has been given us; our place is ready. It is for us to live in such a way that we may occupy it some day."

St. Paul teaches us the way we should live: "If, then, you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Think of what is above, not of what is on earth" (Col. 3:1-2).

 

Sense of mission

Before His Ascension, Jesus said to His disciples, "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you" (Mt. 28:19-20).

With these words Jesus entrusted to the apostles and their successors His threefold office: first, the teaching office: proclaim the Gospel to all people ("make disciples of all nations"); second, the priestly office: the power to administer the sacraments ("baptizing them...."); third, the pastoral office: supervising the faithful who shall be held to the observance of the commandments ("teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you").

He made a promise to the disciples: "And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age" (Mt. 28:20).

Jesus also told them to stay in Jerusalem and to wait for "the promise of the Father": the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4-5).

In order to fulfil our mission in the Church we need to draw strength from the divine presence of Christ and of the Holy Spirit. A catechism states: "In His divine nature, Jesus is everywhere; in His human nature, Jesus is in heaven and in the Blessed Sacrament."

Today Jesus is truly present among us in the Holy Eucharist. In this wonderful sacrament earth is united with heaven, and we receive strength on our earthly journey.

After the Ascension, the disciples were united with Mary in prayer for the coming of the Holy Spirit. This is the first novena (nine days of prayer) in the history of the Church.

As we prepare for the Solemnity of Pentecost, let us ask Our Lady to prepare our hearts for the coming of the Holy Spirit.

剛過去的星期四原是「耶穌升天節」,本地則安排在昨主日(五月十六日)慶祝。

要理書指出:「基督復活後仍活留在世上四十日,為證明祂確實自死者中復活了,也給宗徒們最後訓示。」之後,祂便在眾多人目睹下緩緩升天。「耶穌升天」帶給了我們希望,指派了我們使命。

 

帶給了我們希望

「耶穌升天節」是「希望的節日」、「淺嚐天國的慶日」。教宗聖良一世說:「基督升天標誌着我們升天;我們期望終有一天,會跟隨我們光榮的先軀,被提升天。」

基督升天,永享祂賺得的勝利。我們在「信經」中,宣稱耶穌「坐在全能天主聖父的右邊。」「坐在」意即:一)完成贖世之功後,我們的救世主安享那永恆的喜樂;二)祂是萬王之王,生者死者的審判者。「全能天主聖父的右邊」意謂:一)基督天主性與天主聖父平等無異;二)基督人性在萬物之上,享有權能和光榮。

但,基督的升天,亦裨益了我們:一)祂為人類戰勝了罪惡,重開天國之門;二)祂從天上派遣聖神,降臨教會;三)祂作我們在天上的中保。

赤足聖衣會會士佳播神父Fr. Gabriel of St. Mary Magdalen, O.C.D.寫道:「升天之恩已賞了我們,天國之位亦已給我們預備了,只看我們如何堪當就位而矣。」

聖保祿宗徒在致哥羅森書中(3:1-2)教導我們:「你們既然與基督一同復活了,就該追求天上的事,在那裏有基督坐在天主的右邊。你們該思念天上的事,不該思念地上的事。」

 

指派了我們使命

升天前,耶穌對祂的門徒說:「所以你們要去使萬民成為門徒,因父及子及聖神之名給他們授洗,教訓他們遵守我所吩咐你們的一切。...(瑪竇福音28:19-20)」——委給宗徒和他們的繼承人三個職務:一)訓導職:向萬民宣講福音、教導他們(「使萬民成為門徒」);二)司祭職:施行聖事(「給他們授洗」);三)管牧職:管理信眾,訓令他們要遵守誡命(「教訓他們遵守我所吩咐你們的一切」)。

耶穌向宗徒承諾說:「... 看!我同你們天天在一起,直到今世的終結。(瑪竇福音28:20)」祂吩咐他們「不要離開耶路撒冷,但要等候父的恩許【——即天主聖神】(宗徒大事錄1:4-5)...」

為要執行我們在教會的使命,我們要從臨在的基督和聖神,求得超性的力量。要理書明述:「耶穌的天主性無所不在,祂的人性在天堂和聖體聖事內。」今日,耶穌真實臨在聖體中,而藉這奇妙的聖事,天地共融、神人相繫,我們獲得力量,走人生的旅程。

耶穌升天後,聖母同其他宗徒一起祈禱,靜候聖神降臨,這是聖教會的第一個「九日敬禮」。我們齊向聖母祈求,幫助我們善備即將來到的「聖神降臨節」。

Several years ago, a priest was transferred  to a distant village church in his diocese.
Some weeks after he arrived, he had an occasion to ride the bus fromhis church to the nearest town. When he sat down, he discovered that the driverhad accidentally given him a quarter too much change.    As he considered what to do,  he told himself,  'You'd better givethe quarter back. It would be wrong to keep it.'Then he thought, 'Oh, forget it, it's only a quarter. Who would worry aboutthis little amount? Anyway, the bus company makes huge profits; they will nevermiss it. Accept it as a 'gift from God' and keep quiet.'
When his stop came, he paused momentarily at the door, and then he handed thequarter to the driver and said, 'Here, you gave me too much change. '
The driver, with a smile, replied, 'You are the new priest in the village,right?'
'Yes' he replied.  'Well, I have lately been thinking a lot about going somewhere to pray. I justwanted to see what you would do if  I  gave you extra change. You'll see me at church on Sunday.'

When the priest stepped off of the bus, he literally grabbed the nearest light pole, held on, and said,
  'Oh God, I almost sold You for a quarter!'

為天主!為加拿大!For God and Canada

「為天主!為加拿大!」是本國天主教婦女聯盟Catholic Women League美麗的口號。這口號讓我記起真福聖女加大利納Bl. Catherine of St. Augustine,我們視她為其中一位在加拿大的天主教教會的創辦先鋒;她的紀念日在五月八日。

法國之花

真福加大利納一六三二年五月三日,生於法國諾曼第Normandy。祖母常在家接待貧病的人,給加大利納一面身體力行的好教材。小加大利納三歲半時,已深 深懂得在任何事情上,都承行天主的聖意:每做一件事前,習慣向童貞瑪利亞尋求准許。她信任、忠誠於天主和聖母,矢志「承行主旨」之心,確是我輩的好榜樣。 加大利納十歲時將自己奉獻於聖母, 十二歲加入「慈恩護病女修會Institute of the Augustinian Hospitaller Sisters of the Mercy of Jesus」,十四歲領受會衣,十六歲被派遠赴新法國(現在的加拿大)服務。

在新法國的工作

一六四八年五月三十一日,加大利納從海路出發,航程艱辛且冗長,不少人途中死去,而加大利納亦重病垂危,但 奇蹟地得癒於童貞瑪利亞的特別照顧中。

福女在八月十九日在魁北克Quebec登岸,隨即展開護理病患者的工作。她傑出的護理心與觸角力,嬴得了眾 人的愛戴。她與土著們建立了良好關係,並向他們教授要理。除了悉心關愛病者的健康外,加大利納也設法照顧他們的靈魂;她常為醫院的病人祈禱,祈求他們享有 善終。

痛苦中成聖

真福加大利納藉奉獻痛苦來服務在新法國的聖教會。一六五二年,加大利納的內心,受到兩股誘惑的攻擊:不潔的 思想和放棄工作的念頭。她竭力以祈禱、嚴齋、克己和端莊,克服了第一股誘惑。為克服第二股的誘惑,她特地發了終身聖愿: 要留在新法國。

真福加大利納常在神視中,見到耶穌、聖母、聖人和煉靈。一六四九年,其中一位早期在加拿大殉道的聖人,聖若 望.貝巴St. Jean de Brebeuf神父,經常給福女顯現,並指示她成聖之道。

新法國售酒政策引發連串腐敗,福女得悉耶穌為此而大怒,遂立即多做補贖和祈禱,求罪人能改過自新。她藉着祈 禱和受苦為思定.麥轖Augustin de Mesy總督賺得了悔罪歸化之恩。

一六六三年二月五日,加拿大廣泛地域發生大地震。福女早巳在神視中預知此事。她努力為罪人祈禱和奉獻自己; 結果,强烈地震後,並沒有人死去。

真福為使別人靈魂的得救,以奉獻自己的痛苦為使命,也因此不少煉靈受惠於她。由於她為聖教會在新法國的使 命,奉獻她的痛苦和生命,所以,真福加大利納同時被尊為其中一位在加拿大的天主教會的創辦先鋒。

一六六八年四月二十日,加大利納開始吐血,同年五月八日去逝,時年三十六歲。瞻仰她遺容的人,都說她儀容像 在默觀祈禱中。一九八九年四月二十三日,教宗若望保祿二世,尊加大利納為真福

 

 

“For God and Canada” is the beautiful motto of the Catholic Women’s League, which celebrated the feast of Our Lady of Good Counsel, their patroness, on April 26. This motto reminds me of Blessed Catherine of St. Augustine, whose feast day was May 8. She is considered the co-foundress of the Church in Canada.

A French flower

Blessed Catherine was born on May 3, 1632, in Normandy, France. Her grandmother welcomed the poor and the sick to their home, and thus taught Blessed Catherine not only by words, but also by example. When barely 3 and half, Blessed Catherine already had a deep desire to do the will of God in all things.

She did nothing without first asking permission from the Blessed Virgin Mary. She is a good example of total trust in and fidelity to the will of God and the Virgin Mary.

At the age of 10 she consecrated herself to Our Lady. At 12 she entered the Institute of the Augustinian Hospitaller Sisters of the Mercy of Jesus. At 14 she took the religious habit, and at 16 she came to New France.

Works in New France

The ship which carried this sister left on May 31, 1648. The journey was hard and long. Illness on board caused many deaths. Blessed Catherine became fatally ill and was close to death. However she was miraculously healed by the Blessed Virgin Mary.

When she arrived in Quebec on Aug. 19 Blessed Catherine started working with the sick. With her good nursing qualities and remarkable common sense she was loved by all. She won the friendship of the native people and she taught them Catechism.

The sister looked after the sick with dedication and love. She was concerned, above all, with the wellbeing of their souls. She prayed fervently that all patients in the hospital who died would be in a state of grace.

Sanctity through suffering

Blessed Catherine served the Church in New France by offering up her sufferings. In 1652 the sister was assailed by two temptations: impurity, and a desire to return to France. She overcame the first temptation by prayer, fasting, discipline, and sleeping on a hard bed. She overcame the second by making a perpetual vow to remain in her adopted country.

The sister was blessed with visions of Our Lord, Our Lady, angels, saints, and holy souls. In 1649 St. Jean de Brebeuf (one of the Canadian martyrs) was killed. After his death he appeared to Blessed Catherine frequently in order to be her spiritual guide on the way of perfection.

Trade in liquor erupted like a plague in New France. Blessed Catherine saw Our Lord very angry because of it, so she increased her penance and prayed for the conversion of the guilty parties. Through prayer and suffering she could obtain the grace of conversion, for she obtained this grace for the governor, M. Augustin de Mesy, who had been giving free rein to the liquor trade.

On February 5, 1663, there was a huge earthquake across Canada. Blessed Catherine saw the earthquake in a vision before it took place. She prayed and offered herself as a victim for the sins of the people. Despite of the violence of the quake, there was no report of loss of life.

Offering up suffering for the salvation of others was the mission of Blessed Catherine. Through suffering she also obtained release for a great number of souls in purgatory. Because she offered her life for the Church and for the salvation of New France, Blessed Catherine is considered the co-foundress of the Church in Canada.

On April 20, 1668, Blessed Catherine began to spit blood. She died on May 8 at the age of 36. All the people who viewed her body testified that her countenance stayed like that of a person in contemplation. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II on April 23, 1989.

Exposition of Holy Relics @ H.S.

Today I did my first exposition of holy relics for school!

It was at St. Patrick’s Secondary School, Vancouver, @ the school chapel.

Students of the religion classes came to the chapel and I gave them a talk on veneration of relics.

Here is the summary of my talk:

The key of veneration of relics is “connection”. Holy relics connect us to the past, to the present, and to the future.

The past: relics remind us of the lives of the saints and of the history of the Church. They remind us that the saints were humans like us.

The present: relics help us to remember the souls of the saints who are now in heaven. They help us to be in touch with the "holy”. They help us to be connected to the holy places all over the world, and to the religious communities which the saints were members of.

The future: we honor the bodies of the saints because we believe in “the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting”. We look forward to the day when we will be with the saints forever.

The bodies of the saints were made holy by the Holy Eucharist. Our bodies too are being made holy by the Holy Eucharist. Our bodies can become holy too, and we can become saints.

Relics are not magic. They are sacramentals. The stronger our faith and devotion, the more grace we can receive through devotion of holy relics.

Some students and teachers came during recess and lunch break. I am glad that the students asked me lots of questions regarding relics. I was @ school all day! There will be another exposition next week (May 12)---same time, same place!

服務神父的真福聖者 Founder had special love for priests

五月四日,在加拿大本國,會紀念真福瑪莉.麗妮.帕肋娣Bl. Marie Leonie Paradis,「聖家小姊妹女修會The Little Sisters of the Holy Family」創辦人。在這「司鐸年」期間,我們不妨一談這位瑪莉.麗妮——特別敬愛神父的真福聖人。

 

「聖家小姊妹女修會」

真福瑪莉.麗妮生於一八四零年。年方十三,便加入「聖十字架姊妹會The Holy Cross Sisters」。曾執教鞭二十年,後在紐賓士域New Brunswick省的聖若瑟書院St. Joseph’s College內料理家務。

有感於鐸品的尊貴和偉大,福女决定終身藉謙遜的家務,為司鐸們服務。由於得到不少年青女子們的響應,她遂在 一八八零年創辦了「聖家小姊妹女修會」,專為神職人員服務。

「聖家小姊妹女修會」的修女們在堂區的廚房、洗衣房努力工作,也在堂區、修院、公教學院、主教府邸的祭衣房 內幫忙,後來更伸展到文書的工作——當堂區的秘書、接待員和會計員。她們效法「福音」內的聖婦們,在加里肋亞和猶大遍地,追隨耶穌和宗徒,照顧和服侍他們 的起居。

修女們總結她們的神修和福傳使命:「我們的天主,是聖體聖事中的天主。我們主要的工作,是愛德的工作。我們 的使命,是專為司鐸們服務。我們修會的精神,是納匝肋聖家的精神。我們的格言,是熱心和獻身。我們要完成得比別人多的責任。」

瑪莉.麗妮於一九一二年五月三日去世,一九八四年九月十一日被教宗若望保祿二世宣福,而宣福禮就在加拿大本 土進行。

 

鐸品的偉大

「聖家小姊妹女修會」的修女們,通過她們的服務,見證了神品聖事的尊貴和偉大;她們希望對鐸品一片忠誠和信 德之心,激發和鼓勵司鐸們貞忠於他們的聖願及使命。

要從超性(信、望、愛)三德去理解神品聖事的尊貴和使命,贖主會Redemptorists會士方濟.郭紐 Francis Connell神父的引語,會有些幫助:

當一個神父在心內意識到: 有一些靈魂的永遠得救可能要靠他的牧民工作; 即使僅只有一個靈魂遇有喪亡的危險,他便義無反顧地,甘願承受一切困難、敵意和艱辛,旨在作天主的救靈工具來使一個人靈魂得到寵愛。這比一切世俗的名成利 就都更重要。無可比擬的熱誠將不斷地燃燒着他的心窩

因天主的召叫和派遣,神父有責任把很多的靈魂帶入永生,他便把救助他人靈魂的工作,視為相等於使自己靈 魂得救的必然責任。

我們不應以數字來衡量神父工作的成就救,皆因為使一個靈魂得到寵愛,一整生的一切工作也是值得的。

神父主要是因為愛天主而接受聖召成為司鐸。現在只有藉着勉力勤修愛德,才能使他堪配於每天執行鐸品神職 的大恩。

請為我們教區的神父們祈禱,求主使他們聖德日長,救助更多靈魂進入永生。

In Canada we commemorate Blessed Marie Leonie Paradis, the foundress of The Little Sisters of the Holy Family, on May 4. In this Year for Priests it is very appropriate to recall Blessed Marie Leonie’s special love for priests.

 

Little Sisters of the Holy Family

Blessed Marie Leonie was born in 1840. At the age of 13 she joined the Holy Cross Sisters. After serving as a teacher for 20 years she was entrusted with domestic work at St. Joseph’s College in New Brunswick.

Believing in the dignity and greatness of the priesthood, Blessed Marie Leonie decided to dedicate her life to the service of priests through humble domestic work. Many young women were willing to join her, so in 1880 Blessed Marie Leonie decided to form a new religious community to serve priests: The Little Sisters of the Holy Family.

The sisters were involved mainly in domestic work. They worked in kitchens, laundries, and sacristies of colleges, seminaries, rectories, and bishops’ residences. Later on the Sisters also started to serve priests as secretaries, receptionists, and accountants. They imitated the example of the holy women in the Gospel who ministered to Jesus and the apostles as they travelled throughout Galilee and Judea.

One of the sisters summed up their spirituality and evangelical mission as follows: “Our God is the Eucharistic God, our principle work is charity, our mission is service to the priesthood exclusively, our spirit is the spirit of the Holy Family of Nazareth, our motto is ‘piety and dedication,’ and our duty is to accomplish more than others.”

Blessed Marie Leonie died on May 3, 1912. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II on Sept. 11, 1984. Hers was the first beatification ceremony on Canadian soil.

 

Greatness of the priesthood

By their service, the Little Sisters bear witness to the dignity and greatness of the holy priesthood. It is the hope of the sisters that, by their fidelity and faith in the priesthood, priests themselves will be inspired and encouraged to remain faithful to their promises and their mission.

Below are a few beautiful quotations on the priesthood from Father Francis Connell, CSsR, which help to remind us of the mission and dignity of priests in light of the theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity.

“When this all-important truth is deeply impressed on the mind and heart of the priest – that the eternal salvation of certain souls may depend on his ministerial activities, that difficulties and opposition and weariness should be accepted unhesitatingly when even one soul is in danger, that all the materials benefits and human honours the world could give him are nothing compared to the privilege of serving as the instrument of God in bringing the state of grace to one human being – then the spirit of immeasurable zeal will burn ardently in his heart.”

“In the case of the priest, the hope to bring others to their eternal destiny is intimately linked up with the desire for his own salvation, for the vocation to which he has been divinely summoned involves the duty of bringing many others to eternal happiness.”

“We should not measure success in the priestly ministry in terms of numbers, since to restore even one soul to the state of grace would be worth all the labour of an entire lifetime.”

“It was primarily out of love for God that the priest accepted the divine invitation to enter the sacredotal state, and it is only by ever cultivating the virtue of divine charity that he will prove himself worthy of the great privilege of functioning day by day in the priesthood.”

Let us pray that all the priests in our archdiocese will grow in holiness and bring many souls to eternal happiness.
