Here are some highlights of my homily for the 1 Sunday of Lent this evening (Feb. 25):

Satan is not tempting Jesus to deny His identity but rather to prove Himself in a way that goes against obedience to the Father’s will. Sometimes we can be tempted to define our discipleship based on what we find convenient or expedient.

Jesus will not allow himself to be controlled or dominated by popular expectations of how He should act or what He should do.All texts of Scripture have a context; when we remove texts from their context, then those texts become a pretext and we are in danger of misreading them.

* Jesus calls us to pursue greater righteousness and to not settle for conforming to the world around us.

* Commitment to Jesus means more than just confession of faith (v. Jam 2:18). Commitment to Jesus also involves a change of life that affects our actions.

Here are some highlights of my homily this weekend on Salt and Light.

Light and salt both have disinfectant and preservative properties. The Church as “light” and “salt” refers to her role to identify and counteract sin and so to preserve society from total decay and dissolution. ‌

Light and salt are key to celebration and joy. The Church likewise is the cause of celebration and joy to all of society. To be joyful, one must have a relationship with God.
